Gabriele Rosa: The man behind Kenya’s marathon success
Rosa, 72, has been described in Running Times as “arguably the world’s greatest marathon coach.” October 31, 2006. He is the manager, coach and sports medicine specialist behind many of Kenya’s incredible succession of great runners. He is head of a Nike-funded development and management organization that is playing a major role in shaping the sport. He is clearly the most important and influential figure among European managers and agents working in Kenya.
His athletes, mostly Kenyan, have won every major marathon on Earth.
Rosa-coached athletes have won world cross country titles, world track titles, Olympic medals and set numerous world and marathon course records.
The Italian cardiologist, sports medicine specialist and coach who in 1981 founded Centro Marathon, a sports clinic in Brescia that is part of Rosa Associati’s operations is credited with transforming Kenyan distance running, moulding the country’s top runners from track and cross-country stars into some of the world’s best marathoners including the following names :
